F-150 5.0L V8 or PowerBoost Hybrid? Two Owners Drove the Other Engine Before Signing
"A buddy of mine came to visit with a rental - a 2023 5.0 with 33K miles. He let me drive it and I could not believe how bad the engine performed vs the Powerboost. It was literally night and day." (BigJim, F150gen14.com, "5.0 vs Powerboost Engine", August 2024)
A 5.0 owner answered in the same thread:
"I love my 5.0, has plenty of power for docile daily driving and has plenty of power to be a race car when I want it to. I never need over 2,500 rpm in daily driving, if I'm over that it's just speeding and having fun at that point." (JExpedition07, same thread)
Two owners, same trucks, opposite verdicts. Here are Ford's numbers, then what owners say about the parts that numbers don't cover.
| F-150 engine | Horsepower | Torque | Max available tow rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 | 400 @ 6,000 rpm | 410 lb-ft @ 4,250 rpm | 12,800 lbs |
| 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 | 430 @ 6,000 rpm | 570 lb-ft @ 3,000 rpm | 12,400 lbs (4x2); 11,600 lbs (4x4) |
From ford.com's F-150 page[1], October 2026. Ratings depend on cab, bed, axle and packages.
Ford also says the F-150 Platinum Plus gets 7.2 kW of Pro Power Onboard standard, "which is also available with all hybrid powertrains."
Power off the line
"The PB is best described as effortless power." (HammaMan, F150gen14.com) "From a stop and at partial throttle the PB is wayyy faster than the 5.0 with 87 in the tank. The other trucks drive lighter on their feet though." (dmac, who has owned both, same thread)
Fuel, empty and towing
"I've had both and my '21 5.0 got slightly better fuel economy towing my Airstream on flat roads but the Eco/PowerBoost trucks were faster and weren't slowed down in the hills like I was (big hills)." (fatBatman, F150gen14.com, "5.0L V8 coyote vs 3.5 hybrid powerboost")
"When empty, my 5.0 got about 18-19 MPG in the city and about 20-21 HWY. My '24 PowerBoost gets 20-24 MPG in the city (depending on how much I use city streets or highway routes) and 23-24 HWY." (fatBatman, same post)
Those are one owner's numbers. Check EPA ratings for the exact truck. Compare official ratings for specific configurations at fueleconomy.gov .
Weight
"My main beef is the powerboost is 500lbs heavier vs a similarly optioned 5.0/3.5/2.7." (dmac, F150gen14.com )
Weight comes out of payload. Read the door sticker on the exact truck.
Turbos, or none
"I got the 5.0 because I couldn't find a used truck with the 6.2 and because I work on my own cars; I have never been a fan of working on turbo vehicles." (Pedaldude, "5.0L V8 coyote vs 3.5 hybrid powerboost" )
The generator
"I have the PowerBoost now with the 7.2 kWh generator and I am very happy. The 5.0 is still a great engine and I kinda wish I could have both...for no reason at all other than just to say I have them." (fatBatman, same thread)
Not everyone needs it. A 5.0 owner in the same thread runs his camp off a portable power station instead. When storms knock power out in the county, though, a truck that can run a fridge and a few lights is the kind of thing owners remember.
Who should buy which
- 5.0L V8: the higher max tow rating, simpler hardware, the sound, and lighter feel. Owners who work on their own trucks lean here.
- PowerBoost: more torque from a stop, owners' city mpg reports, and Pro Power Onboard.
- Owners who drive a lot of short trips lean here.
- Either: drive both back to back, like the owners above did.
